Fran Williams 07968 177663 franwilliams@bsharp.org.uk

I grew up in rural West Dorset, found my vocation at a young age, wasn’t happy at school, volunteered at a children’s home and primary school, worked in a residential home for children with disabilities before moving to London and qualifying in 1984, as a professional social worker. I worked in several multi-disciplinary teams with the arts and person centred focus as a vehicle to working with children, young people and their families. Later gaining a Diploma in Counselling, with over 38 years experience as a senior practitioner in youth and social work, I developed various innovative youth work projects and initiatives in the heart of the community.

I have an understanding of and respect for the many challenges that different people face which informed my approach when, in 2007, I co founded B Sharp. Together with a group of young people and like-minded professionals, I committed to creating a vibrant, fresh thinking youth music charity with great ambition intended to have a lasting positive impact – regardless of but with respect for, individuals academic, economic, cultural or social background. Ten years on, I am proud to say that I have been a significant part of growing B Sharp from its small beginnings and it now offers an extensive programme of opportunity from early years to adulthood. B Sharp has become a main part of the music, training, workforce offering in West Dorset and East Devon and is becoming a household name in the area.

B Sharp is lucky to have such excellent chair’s, trustees, music leaders, composers, creative, freelancers, musicians, partners, associates, funders, supporters … who have wide ranging experience and passion for B Sharp, young people, community, Arts, enterprise, business, cultural education offering excellent oversight and input.

Jacques Verhaeren

Guitar
Trainee Music Leader - Jacques VerhearenJacques was a late-comer to the world of music, not playing an instrument till his last year of school at the age of 16. Once he picked up the guitar however, he realised that he had found something worth pursuing for the rest of his life. Though he wouldn’t class himself as a guitarist, he is willing to play whatever is needed to get the job done, now playing bass for local Afro-Funk band Papa Le Gal with fellow trainees Olli and Greg. He can often be seen dancing in silence to music inside his own head and has now resigned himself to the fact that music has officially taken over his whole body. Spent a while rubbing shoulders with special brew guzzling homeless people as a busker in this country and abroad, although the money was good, got fed up with being thought of as a homeless man as he always had a roof over his head. Is loving his time with B Sharp as making music with others has always been for him, the best way of learning music, and in John, Glyn and Ralph, he has found some excellent teachers.

Matt Hartnell

Drums and Percussion
Matt Hartnell B SharpHello! Matt here. After recently achieving a 1st class degree in drumming performance at Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music, I have re-emerged on the B Sharp scene to help to continue the cycle of teaching and learning which has influenced my musical and personal development so much over the years. So far I have gained experience drumming in a diverse range of bands, as well as in composition, production and teaching. My aims for the future are to progress and grow as music leader and to eventually sustain myself playing and producing music that everyone can enjoy.

Assistant Music Leaders

Chloe Stratta

Chloe Strata B SharpChloe graduated in July 2013, having achieved a first class bachelor of music degree at the University of Manchester. She studied as a soprano with Catherine Mikic, and is hoping to pursue a classical singing career. During her time in Manchester, Chloe was involved in large and small scale concerts with various choral ensembles, as well as opera scenes and musical theatre. In her final year, she took the lead role in Manchester University Music Society’s opera, and returned to her hometown, Lyme Regis, as the soprano soloist for Lyme Bay Chorale’s April concert. Meanwhile, she has enjoyed writing acoustic songs with guitar since the age of 16; a skill she hopes to develop further. She has performed her own songs on occasion in Manchester, and also sings and plays the violin in a folk/acoustic band. She enjoys a wide range of styles of music, and is very excited to be a young music leader with B-Sharp.

Dean Skinner

Spoken Word Rapper and beat-boxer / B Sharp Board
Dean SkinnerMy name is Dean Skinner, I am a 21 year old self taught musician who lives, and has lived in Axminster for 19 Years. I have always had a passion for music….All Music!!!! I Beatbox, Rap, Sing , Play the guitar, write spoken word poetry and can get by on the piano and drums. In my teen years whilst attending The Axe Valley Community College, I ran a Beatboxing Club at lunch times and another one after school at The Axminster Young Peoples Centre, where I became a Senior Member. Since then It became apparent that other people liked what I was doing, and from that point on I regularly attended local Open Mic Nights and furthered my education at Exeter College, studying….Yes!!!….MUSIC!! Joining B Sharp was the best thing I have ever done for myself, my musical knowledge and my growth as a musician. To teach others in itself is also something I have grown to become passionate about, but to be in the position to teach the younger generation about something I appreciate so much is a dream come true. In doing so, not only do they learn how to apply their strengths, address their weaknesses and strive to improve, they teach me how to address mine and help me grow as a music leader and as a musician.

Olivia Benger

Olivia bengerHi, I’m Olivia. I’m 21 and live in Dalwood in the lovely rural depths of Devon. I started playing the clarinet aged 11 at Woodroffe and soon realised I wanted to pick up the saxophone (mainly because I was dying to be a part of the school Jazz Band..) I then went on to study BA Music for three years at the University of Chichester where I majored in classical performance – both on saxophone and clarinet. I was also very involved in various orchestras and bands, particularly enjoying pit work for operas and musical theatre shows. I’m looking forward to branching out with my music – having only just joined B Sharp, I can’t wait to become more involved and develop my skills as a music leader. It is such a fantastic way to get involved and give something to the local community whilst enjoying every minute of what you’re doing!

Will Lister

Will Lister B Sharp TraineeHi, I’m Will and I live in Lyme Regis. I love all genres of music and I produce my music and also DJ. I play bits of piano and drums and have been playing guitar for about 7 years now and really love it. I’ve been part of B Sharp for about 6 years and it’s been one of the most valuable things that I am a part of, giving me a much better knowledge of how to be part of a group, how to come up with and write songs, and it’s fantastic to be helping to lead groups, and take that creativity to the next level. I’m forever grateful to B Sharp for skills that it has taught me, and now i’ll finally be able to give something back. This is a link to my sound cloud! Cheers!

Dom Kirtley

2012 – 2015
B Sharo Trainee Dom KIrtlyHey, I’m Dom, I’m 16 and I live in Lyme Regis. I’m really into all types of music, from DJing and recording music to playing saxophone and the Bass guitar. I’m currently trying to put together a home studio to record some electronic style music and I’ve recently been running workshops with the junior town band, teaching them about samba drumming. I’ve been involved in B sharp for around 3 years now and I’ve loved every minute of it! The Project has really helped me progress with direction as a musician, and has given me a much more rounded and wider view of what you can achieve through music, the community feel of the project is really unique, and it’s great to be able to help to lead it!

Emma Franklin

2012 – 2015
Hi, I’m Emma, I’m 17 and I’m currently studying A-Levels, including music, which I am thoroughly enjoying. I have been playing the saxaphone since I was 8, it is something i thoroughly enjoy, and something I hope to keep up no matter what I end up doing in the future. I also enjoy playing several other instruments (at an amateur level)! Working as a trainee for B Sharp not only enables me to develop my musical ability, but also helps me improve my own skills in leadership and teamwork. My first experience with B Sharp was a project set up for year 9 students who were planning on doing music GCSE, 4 years ago, since then I have been part of as many B Sharp projects as possible. Being given the role of a Lead Trainee has been fantastic, and I love the feeling of giving back to the project what it has given me over the years. The best thing about B Sharp is everyone’s shared enthusiasm and passion for music, its what makes the project so unique. Its an amazing thing to be a part of!

Jake Perrett

Joe Bailey

Joe Bailey Trainee Music Leader“I’m Joe and I have played guitar (at an amateur level) for 5 years. I am one of the newest members to B Sharp among the trainee team as I’ve only been part of the amazing project for 2-3 years on and off being involved in a few projects such as: Busking, Generation Freedom, Humanity and the current project, Hear Here. Enough to know that it’s a truly amazing project. “B Sharp works with young people for young people to improve their lives through music and art.” And that’s what B Sharp has helped me to do and I am not alone. B Sharp offers outstanding opportunities and experiences and when I had the honor of becoming an apprentice trainee, these become broader. I now get to see and help younger people come through the same process I did in boosting skills in music and art. Every workshop and every performance is full of enthusiasm and passion for music, arts and just being creative. Without B Sharp, Lyme Regis youth would be nothing”

Ella De Vera Hunt

Secretary 2011 – 2013

Ella de Vere Hunt“I’ve been playing both the acoustic and electric guitar since I was eight. Throughout the years my love for the guitar has grown stronger and stronger; still growing today. Peter Green, Paul Wassif and David Gilmour have been the three guitarists who have inspired me the most. My first experience with B Sharp was performing at the Eden Project in 2010. I was extremely impressed with the compositions which had been created and saw what a great opportunity B Sharp offers to young people. As a musician, there is nothing better then working in a friendly group with other young musicians who share a love for music. I always leave with a buzz after B Sharp rehearsals, everyone is so friendly and positive. I see my new role as a trainee, as a great opportunity to build my leadership and professional skills and collaborate with people that share my passion for music.” Currently studying music at Falmouth University.

Phoebe Hill

Founder Member B Sharp, Secretary 2007 – 2011

Phoebe Hill“My involvement as a founder member and role of secretary with B Sharp not only contributed to my achievement of a Gold Arts Award but also was important in me being selected to becoming an ambassador as part of Arts Award’s Youth Network. This involves making decisions about the direction of the organisation and extending areas of it. For example recently they made a separate website for young people doing the Arts Award. I will also be going on residential weekends like the one near Liverpool to gain the skills to put on arts events on my own and to promote Arts Award”.

“Through B Sharp I gained experience in communicating with a range of people, both in workshops and formally as secretary and developed a feel for having a say in what is put on for young people in the arts world. Living in Lyme Regis which is a rural area there were not a large range of opportunities available to young people to choose between, so we had to ascertain exactly what people wanted. Through B Sharp I have been taught by and worked with highly skilled music leaders and developed skills and a professionalism that will allow me to run events in the future”.

Olli Dixon

Trainee 2008 – 2011
To me ‘B sharp’ is a great project which has now been tried and tested and isTrainee Music Leader - Oli Dixon ready to expand, exploring it’s visions of future music in the local area. It has provided a base for both education and recreation with a core group that utilise all the opportunities offered to them. The project is well led and well managed, with a very democratic decision making process. Proving to be great ambassadors for the town of Lyme Regis, the ‘B Sharp’ youth members are polite, fun and have an ability to ‘understand’ a wide range of musical ideas. This, (in my view) is a compliment to the way the group works together to overcome problems and the way the training and information has been delivered. Personally I have had great fun working with the project. It has provided support, education and professional training to me, all of which I wish to continue giving back as a trainee youth leader!

Owen Cook

Founder Member Trainee 2007 – 2008
Trainee Music Leader - Owen CookMy name is Owen Cooke I’m 25 and I live in Beer, Devon. I play a small amount of keyboard but produce music on the computer. I have a number of groups and projects ranging from underground hard style and Psy-Trance to electronic pop music, with a large number of people involved. I enjoy all music styles as i believe you can learn from every genre. The B sharp project is very important to me as it not gives young people a flame for their musical and group organisation interests, it also help me to build my teaching skills that are very important for my future in the music industry. Seeing the young people happy makes me happy and its great when all the strings are tied and a performance/piece of music or even just a meeting is produced.

Greg Walters

Trainee 2009 – 2011
Trainee Greg WaltersAs a child I entered the world of Glastonbury festival and quickly realised that music was the only thing for me. Whether drumming in the band Papa Le Gal or creating ominous synth driven drones I’m always trying to learn, teach and create anything and everything to do with music. I was a late comer to the B Sharp project, and have performed in various projects such as the Lyme Regis fossil festival and Weymouth carnival. “When I first arrived at B Sharp, I was highly impressed by the project. I have learnt a great deal from not only music leaders but also from all of the kids I have worked with. It has been very rewarding and well worth doing and I hope to see B Sharp’s progress into the future.”

Papa le Gal

Lead trainees Jacques Verhaeren, Ollie Dixon, Greg Walters and Grace Gillan all formed Papa le Gal some of whom are now based in Bristol. Papa le Gal is a very successful band who return to Lyme Regis periodically to play on their home turf and continue inspiring young musicians by working on B Sharp projects when available. www.papalegal.co.uk
